Background…

First a bit about the company, for those of you who been in a coma or living under a rock and haven’t heard of these guys.

JayJays is a family run business established in the infamous Brecon in 1993.

Being based in Brecon they are well known throughout the infantry world and amongst KitPests of all flavours.

As well as producing well made belt kits and other accoutrements they are possibly better known for their bergan modifications.

Which brings me nicely onto the subject in hand.

I’d been mithering for a while about customising my bergen to make it more useful and more importantly, comfortable.

I previously bought (FTRS apparently aren’t entitled to PLCE etc), a brand spanking new short back bergan courtesy of the guys over at KitMonster (http://www.kitmonster.co.uk/product_info.php/cPath/30_45/products_id/2087) and my overdraft.

When I use it, I found the shoulder straps to be rather narrow and quite firm.

Not that I spend much time out in the field nowadays, but anyone can be uncomfortable right?

I had already made a start on my bergan with the purchase of the KSF side ‘pockets’, (https://kitpest.co.uk/british-tactical-side-pouches/) then the removal of the top pouch but wanted to improve on that.

“in for a penny…” I thought so whilst I was getting the shoulder straps done I’d get the triple pouch mod added at the same time.

Believe me when I say I was tempted to get the whole raft of modifications that JayJays offer but don’t really have enough of a need to justify them, even to myself…

Following this link https://www.jayjaysbrecon.co.uk/bergan-adaptions-c102x2089229 will take you directly to the goodness that is the bergan adaptions page.

Description…

The triple pouch set is pre-stitched onto a panel which is in turn stitched to the bergan.

They are made of “1000 denier MOD spec DPM nylon” which means they should update the blurb of the pouches…

I don’t know if it’s Erebis or licenced MTP, but it is a pretty good match for the main body of my bergan.

Like the set up shown, I now have water, cooker and food easily accessible.

My pouch set is bound with the same olive binding as the bergan and the webbing straps are also the same.

Onto the wider shoulder straps…what a difference!

Quoting JayJays here,

We totally remove the old straps and replace them with our own purpose designed ones.

Our straps are curved, shaped and tapered, one end is wider allowing a large area to spread the load, then tapering down to a thinner end stopping it digging into your ribs.

We use high density closed cell foam which retains its shape and form for longer periods under load making it longer lasting by far.

We add spacer fabric under the strap for even more padding and comfort

I’ll agree with the comfort comment and don’t need to add to it.

Opinion…

Will the adaptions make my short jaunts onto the hills more comfortable and easier?

Damn right they will.

Would I use JayJays again if I needed more adaptations done?

Without any hesitation whatsoever.

Would I recommend JayJays to others?

Again, yes without hesitation.

In Summary

A quick turnaround service, the quality of workmanship is high.

I’ll mention the warranty here, JayJays policy is a lifetime warranty that covers any, of their, manufacturing defects i.e. stitching.

It DOES NOT cover normal wear and tear of the product over its lifetime.

A leaflet explaining this is enclosed with your bergan, be careful that you don’t throw it

out…
I am happy as I now have a ‘Mary Poppins’ bergan, “a place for everything and everything in its place” ** I’m just testing and adjusting those places.

Ratings

Cost – £££££: The price is dependent on what you want done.

Value for money 1-5: 5, worth the money, the quality of the workmanship justifies the expense.

Ease of use 1-5: 5, Using JayJays ordering system is very very straight forward, you just read about the modifications you’re interested in, “add to your basket” and Bobs your uncle.

N.B. if you are unable to collect your bergan in person, which is a nice touch, you’d best click the “Return my bergan” button to make sure it gets returned to you.

Construction 1-5: 5, can’t fault it, it’s solid.

Allyness 1-5: 4, it looks different from everybody else’s so yes Ally, the JayJays name adds a certain cachet as well.
